2009 TTACC Annual Dinner

On September 14, 2009, TTACC organized 4th traditional annual dinner with Texas senator Rodney Ellis as the key note speaker at Sugarland Marriott Hotel. Besides Consul General of Turkey Akil Oktem and Deputy Consul Ali Findik, the Turkish and American businessmen and women, local business media, and organizations participated at the dinner. Senator Ellis presented their awards to the most successful entrepreneur and the company of 2009. TTACC president Ertugrul Akkus also presented the “Award of Chamber” to Senator Ellis. Guests enjoyed not only the meaning of breaking fast together, but also learned about the possible new trade opportunities in Turkey.

Texas Turkish American Chamber of Commerce hosted a group of Turkish business leaders in New Mexico

Texas Turkish American Chamber of Commerce hosted a group of Turkish business leaders in Houston TX, Santa Fee NM, Albuquerque NM conjunction with the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce. The group started in Santa Fe, where they got a taste for New Mexican politics as the second session of the 50th Legislative Session continues in the roundhouse. They joined Turquoise Council of Americans and Eurasians’s annual Turkish NewMexican Friendship Reception.They met Governor Hon.Martinez ,representatives and senators.

Terri Cole, CEO & President of the Chamber gave the group an overview presentation on Albuquerque and what makes it such a great place to do business. During the discussion it was learned that Turkey has some amazing hot air ballooning. One of Albuquerque's famous pilots, Troy Bradley, balloons there at least 3 months out of the year! nevsehir_ttacc1

With that wisdom in hand, the group headed to Intel Corporation where Liz Shipley, Government Affairs Manager in Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, organized an informative tour regarding their production as their largest manufacturing plant. From Intel, the group scurried over to SCHOTT Solar where Dr. Michael Jacquorie, President and COO, led an insightful presentation on all the technologies that SCHOTT provides to the world at large, including Turkey. The delegation also received a tour of their manufacturing plant.

And, would an overview of Albuquerque be complete without the Albuquerque Journal? The group sectioned off for an educational meeting with Journal Editorial Board staff which included Kent Walz, Editor, and Karen Moses, Managing Editor. Both groups learned about the role of the media in each community and how they each work to empower their citizens.

The Turkiye-World Trade Bridge 2009 was another important event organized by TUSKON, which has previously conducted eight other trade bridge summits, each of which has significantly helped Turkish businessmen access new markets and diversify Turkey's foreign trade.

Turkey closing the gap with European economies

Turkey, with the seventh-largest economy in Europe, saw its gross domestic product (GDP) valued at purchasing turkey power parity (PPP) climb by 163.12 percent from 1992 to 2009, a rise greater than in most European countries and one expected to continue further in the years to come.

According to the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) World Economic Outlook report dated October 2009, Turkey's GDP valued at PPP was $188.8 million in 1985. This figure reached $330.3 billion in 1992 and rose to $869.1 billion last year, representing a 163.12 percent increase in the space of 17 years. During the same period, Spain's GDP valued at PPP rose by 125.74 percent, while this figure was 115.08 percent for the UK, 89.64 percent for France, 81.6 percent for Russia, 71.4 percent for Germany and 66.06 percent for Italy.

The IMF expects Turkey's GDP valued at PPP to increase further to $1.13 trillion in 2014, with its share in the overall European economy reaching 4.88 percent. The size of the Turkish economy currently amounts for 4.55 percent of the European economy overall, up from 3.4 percent in 1992.

TTACC congratulates Governor Bryant

JACKSON – Phil Bryant was sworn in today inside the House Chamber at the State Capitol as the 64th Governor of Mississippi. The ceremony was moved indoors due to inclement weather.

In his Inaugural address he emphasized the message of Mississippians “rising together”.

“We must dedicate ourselves to the belief that we may fall separately, but we will surely rise together,” Bryant said in today’s speech. “And if we are to rise together, we must do so with the inherent characteristics of Mississippi. We are a people of character who value hard work and treasure loyalty to our families, state and country.”
