Meral: Turkish-American business needs serious attention
meralRızanur Meral Turkey may not be able to come through as a global economic leader unless its trade with the US multiplies in the coming years, Turkish Confederation of Businessmen and Industrialists (TUSKON) Chairman Rızanur Meral has said. Speaking to the Anatolia news agency in Washington yesterday, Meral stated that "regardless of how strong our relationship with other geographies is, if we don't have a place in the American market, than we can't say that ‘we are a global power'." Stating that for an economy that has tripled in size in less than a decade, the US market -- making up a quarter of the total global economy -- cannot be ignored.
Meral also stated that Turkish investors are facing difficulties and that they aren't the only ones to blame for the lack of trade between the two nations. After the Sept. 11 attacks, Meral stated, Turkish businesspeople became uncomfortable with the treatment they received when applying for visas and entering the country. He added, however, that Turkish businessmen should be more open to partnerships with US companies in other parts of the world, highlighting that American businessmen need expertise in developing countries, and that Turkish entrepreneurs could fill this need for them.

Turkey hopes to grow economic ties and influence within Middle East

gr2010040705518
By Janine Zacharia  Washington Post Foreign Service Thursday, April 8, 2010GAZIANTEP, TURKEY --

Since Turkey and Syria eliminated border restrictions several months ago, the crowds of Syrians at the glittering Sanko Park Mall in this southeastern Turkish city have grown tenfold. Exports from Gaziantep to Syria are booming, and rich Turkish businessmen are stepping up their investments across the border.
"There's no difference between Turks and Syrians," said Olfat Ibrahim, a 35-year-old Syrian construction engineer with bags of goods in hand. She said she has stepped up her visits across the border since the lifting of visa requirements. "Syria is Turkey.''
The thriving trade is a sign of Turkey's rising influence with Syria, part of its effort to reach out to neighboring countries to build economic ties it hopes will also stabilize political relationships and expand its influence in the region. Those efforts, which include business ventures with Iran, illustrate to some extent how futile U.S. efforts to isolate those countries with sanctions have become. They've also raised concerns in Washington and in Israel about whether this key Muslim member of NATO is undergoing a fundamental realignment.

TUSKON Has Helped Globalize Turkey’s Name, Says Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan

The Turkish Confederation of Businessmen and Industrialists (TUSKON) has played a great role in increasing Turkey's reputation in the world and building bridges with various foreign countries in line with the government's constructive foreign policy agenda, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said.

Speaking at a TUSKON summit on Saturday, Prime Minister Erdoğan said in every country he visits, he is almost certain to meet some very successful businessmen, adding that the leaders and most senior politicians of those countries talk of these businessmen highly and with praise. He said it was a great source of happiness for him to see the work created by Turkish businessmen in different parts of the world. "When they tell me, ‘This road was built by a Turkish company or that mall is owned by a Turkish businessman,' I feel an indescribably great sense of happiness and excitement. I would like to thank all businessmen who make us proud in this way."

The prime minister said businessmen had to face problems wherever they go in the world, noting that it was their primary duty to solve these problems. He said the capacity and efforts of Turkey's business people had brought Turkey up to 17th place from 26th in the ranking of worlds' biggest economies. He thanked Turkey's businessmen who helped make his possible. He noted that in the past two months, four international credit rating agencies had increased Turkey's ratings.
