FIBA Championship to bring $300 mln to Turkey

The International Basketball Federation's (FIBA) 2010 FIBA World Championship Turkey, set to take place Aug. 28-Sept. 12, is expected to generate $300ttacc_news-2010-fiba-world-championship million in revenue for the country's economy, the event's main sponsor, mobile phone operator Turkcell, has said. In a statement issued on Monday Turkcell elaborated on Turkey's short-term economic benefits from the world's greatest basketball event. According to Turkcell's calculations, the amount of money participating teams and their fans will spend on accommodation, transportation and tournament tickets as well as other parties on events, sponsorships, advertisements and investments in facilities will amount to $300 million.

All hotels in İstanbul, İzmir, Kayseri and Ankara where the games will be played are fully booked.

A total of 100,000 tourists are expected to follow the games between 24 national basketball teams in four cities. Teams, players, sponsors, the press and spectators will spend $44 million for accommodation. The accommodation of the US national team alone will amount to almost $1.3 million.

With 80 percent of all tickets already sold, the tournament is expected to attract 200,000 spectators. Sponsors have contributed around $6.5 million to the championship, while Turkey has spent some $100 million on sports arenas and other facilities and another $20 million for the organization of the championship.
